“It’s Not Scary; It’s Not Even Dark”

So I sold my first ever non-horror short story this week. ‘Golden Ticket’ is about…drum roll please…a horse race, the Grand National in particular. It’s not scary; it’s not even dark, unless perhaps you’re a horse.

I’ve been on a horse once and it wasn’t the best experience I’ve ever had. And that wasn’t even the horse’s fault – he was absolutely fine. I have watched the National on several occasions though, and even though by any other competitive sport’s standards it’s short, I found it exhilarating. Of course, then I found out about the way they put down horses on the spot if they fall and break a leg or some other equally painful injury. Apparently it’s not worth it to fix them.

‘Golden Ticket’s’ been published today on The Saturday Evening Post’s website alongside a lovely illustration by Karen Donley-Hayes. It was a real surprise. Makes me see all my other non-horror stories in a new light…
